So You Want to be a Millionaire?!
Asking the Hard Questions About the Desire for Wealth
Have you ever asked your little one what they want to be when they grow up and they said, “A Millionaire!”? What was your response to that? What should it have been?
Let’s dig in!
To me, when a kid says they want to be a millionaire, I hear this:
1. They have a desire for more
2. They have a desire for freedom
3. They have NO idea what they want to actually be and no plan to get to their millionaire status.
They’re kids, right?! No big deal!!
Come on Wealthy Kid parents, you know me better than that!!
This conversation with your kids about becoming a millionaire opens an enormous opportunity for growth and planning with your kiddo.
The thing is, when someone - young or old - says they want to be a millionaire they are simply stating a desire or wish for a lifestyle that seems above their own. They want to be able to go to the store and buy everything their little heart desires and not have to worry about how much it costs. They want to purchase a new car when they need or want one, not when they can “afford” one. They want to go on trips that are not monetarily possible at the moment. They want to live in the “dream house”. They want to work when, where, and how they “want”. HOWEVER, they don’t have the first clue as to how they are going to make that dream of being a millionaire an actual reality.
Side note here: When you’re your kids tell you they want to be a millionaire, please don’t scoff! Don’t write them off or shake your head or roll your eyes or say something like,” yah, don’t we all”. It’s SO easy to do but all that is doing to your kid is projecting YOUR limiting belief onto them. They have an open mind right now, don’t shut that down! They also have nothing but time and opportunity. Millionaire or even billionaire status is not out of their reach. They just need guidance.
That guidance is where you step in when their dream is to be ‘a millionaire’. You can say things like, “That’s an awesome dream! I think you can do that! Do you know how you’re going to become a millionaire?” See what they say!
The point of this conversation is to make your kids understand that being a millionaire or billionaire is possible but they need a plan or an idea of how they are going to get there. They need a goal to work toward. They need a path that they can follow. They also need a reason for this path.
The next question we should ask our kiddos is why they want to be millionaires. Is it cars, mansions, or the coolest tech? That's all fine and good but they need you to open their minds to the possibilities. Yeah, they can have cool cars but they could also help build new homes for those in need. They could travel the world helping small villages get access to clean water. They could foster and adopt lots of kiddos to stay in that big ‘ol house they want to have.
Saying you want to be wealthy is a great dream but it's only a dream if you don’t have a path to accomplish that dream.
Please don’t read too much into this. I am well aware that these kids are just that…kids. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be told the truth about dreams. The truth is, they are hard, they require work and they don’t all come true unless we force them to. We also need to make sure our kids have goals to look forward to and work for. Being wealthy is not a goal. Being a doctor or business owner, an inventor or an engineer who becomes wealthy is definitely a goal!! Last, we need to make sure that our littles’ hearts are in the right place. Wealth is a blessing when you are spreading it around and blessing others with it. Kids need to be trained that as they build wealth and accomplish their dreams, they need to reach out and help others along the way.
Our kids are our future! Let’s help them make it as bright as possible!
God bless!
