Cash for Kids

How to Make Spending Money at Christmas Time

Kids want to spend at the holidays too! As they get older, they want more expensive gadgets and gifts. If you’re like everyone else, funds may be a bit tight right now so what do we do when our kiddos are asking for some holiday cash to spend?!

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again - They have to LEARN TO EARN!!

This is a great time of year to drive that point home!

Here are a few things kids can do to make some money during the holidays:

1. Go around to the neighbors and ask if they can rake or blow leaves for them
2. Pressure washing driveways
3. Making ornaments
4. Creating gifts for purchase - beeswax candles, sugar scrubs, baking mixes, jewelry, and herb butters are all great ideas!
5. Sell some unique inside plants - small herbs for the kitchen or succulents make great choices
6. Do you have a crafty kiddo? Let them offer a gift-wrapping service to friends and family
7. Online Store - These are a bit complicated to set up but if you have a kiddo who is tech-savvy and loves to learn new skills on YouTube, unleash their powers! Let them get that digital store set up so they can earn some extra cash! 8. Babysitting, Petsitting, Housesitting - These are all great services that kids can offer to neighbors and friends during the holidays. Pet sitting and house sitting especially are not HUGE responsibilities but they are definitely things that people pay for during this time of travel.
9. Trash Can Cleanout - This is a new one to me but apparently taking off! I have to give a special thanks to my lovely family member Audrey for telling me about this one! It sounds strange but people actually pay their trash service or separate individuals to come and clean out their large trash cans. Yep! This is not a glamorous job but one that could make some extra cash. All you need is some cleaner, gloves, a hose, and some elbow grease!

Whatever your kiddo chooses to do, congratulate them on taking the initiative! Push them along and help them set a goal to reach. Maybe they want to make $50 or $100 to put toward some gifts or even just to have some extra cash for themselves. This is not really about the outcome, although making some extra money is nice, it's more about the lessons that come out of the journey as well as the reward that comes with hard work. Don’t let them forget that they need to allocate their income properly to tithing, saving and spending so help them build that into the goal.

Happy Holiday season everyone!
